Across from the church is the Baptistry with its famous Gate of Paradise, or East Doors, by Lorenzo Ghiberti. He made the North Doors (14 panels) between 1403 and 1424 and the East Doors (10 panels) between 1425 and 1452. This much time was required to model the wax, cast the bronze, chase the bronze, gild the panels with gold leaf, and finally the burnishing of the gold leaf.
