To be a gondolier in Venice your father must have been a gondolier. The gondolas are all painted black, from the times of The Plague when tar was used to ward off disease. Only during Carnival are they painted other colors. It was hard to keep seated since the gondolas are tilted to one side to allow the gondolier to stear them with one oar.
