When a kapu, or law, was broken the penalty was always death. Otherwise the gods might react violently with volcanoes, tidal waves, famine, or earthquakes. To protect themselves the people rushed the kapu breaking and out him to death. If he reached the pu'uhonua a ceremony would be performed by the kahuna pule, or priest, and the offender could be returned home safely.
